State of Maine Cheese Company has been a staple source for quality Maine cheese in the heart of the mid-coast since 1983. We specialize in Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gouda and are especially known for our fresh, squeaky cheese curd.
After residing in the Camden-Rockport area for over 30 years and being lovingly grown and nurtured by former owners Peter Kress, Taylor Mudge and Cathe Morrill (along with longtime cheesemaker David Baker) in the fall of 2019 State of Maine Cheese was passed on to a new generation and has moved to Springdale Farm in Waldo.
The relationship between State of Maine Cheese and Springdale Farm is one that goes back many years, as Springdale was the primary source for their cheese milk for decades. The rich milk produced by the Jersey and Guernsey cows of Springdale Farm produces cheese full of flavor and excellent cheese yield.
Carrie Whitcomb, 4th generation dairy farmer at her family's Springdale Farm in Waldo, sparked an interest in cheese back in college in the early 2000's. As a sophomore in college in 2005, she spent a summer interning at State of Maine Cheese company, learning about cheesemaking and she was hooked. After spending several years making cheese, cheesemongering and working in the food industry in metro-New York, she returned home in 2011 to help manage the family farm with the desire to some day start a creamery. In 2015 she started her own small creamery, Springdale Farm Creamery specializing in Fresh Cream Cheese and Triple Cream Brie.
In 2019 the opportunity arose to become the next owner of State of Maine Cheese Company and Carrie took the leap to carry on the beloved brand and continue making the line of great Maine cheeses from the Jersey and Guernsey milk of Springdale Farm.
